Image Question:
If anyone is diagnosed as having an allergy to wheat and milk and would like to know which alternative flours they could use to make chapatis, could you suggest something or whether there are any naan ranges available in the supermarkets which are wheat free?

Answer:
As far as I know there are no wheat-free naan or chapatis available ready-made. So you would have to make them from scratch, unfortunately! Wheat and gluten-free flours include: soya, rice, corn, quinoa, millet, buckwheat or amaranth. There are also gluten-free flour mixes available that are easier to bake with - try mixes by Dove's Farm or The Stamp Collection, available in supermarkets and health food shops.

If you are not severely allergic to wheat - as in, you don't go into anaphylactic shock when you eat it, similar to when people eat nuts - you might be able to tolerate spelt flour, which is an older variety of wheat that is much lower in gluten. Many people with wheat intolerance can eat it. It is suitable for baking bread - and very good for flatbreads, so much more suitable for making a naan.
